Void && Form by Team Mangshinsal (Hee-Eun Kim, In-Hye Lee) playfully explores how emotion recognition systems attempt to translate human experience into measurable data. When a visitor stands before the screen, FaceAPI analyses their facial expressions in real time and displays a digital twin that mirrors each movement. Detected emotions are sorted into standard labels like happiness, sadness, anger, or surprise, each triggering pre-composed musical responses that exaggerate the supposed emotional state. Anger erupts into distorted electric guitar, sadness slows into piano melodies, and moments of calm dissolve into the faint resonance of singing bowls.
The screen layers three elements: the digital twin mirroring the visitor's face, a scrolling text field revealing the system's algorithmic reasoning, and a mandala rotating endlessly in the background. The text displays the machine's guesses, updates, and misinterpretations in real time. The mandala visualises the system's continuous effort to stabilise something that keeps shifting. While the twin follows every gesture, it remains disconnected from the actual emotions driving those movements.
Through humour and exaggeration, Void && Form makes visible the gap between what is felt and what gets recognised. The system performs confidence where there is only approximation, producing a spectacle of misreading that is both absurd and revealing. In Team Mangshinsal’s broader practice, the work reflects a continuing interest in the Buddhist notion of impermanence, suggesting that emotion is not something to be captured or fixed but something to be observed as it unfolds.
